Winged Victory of Samothrace

This sculpture is a tribute to the victory of a sea battle.
The sculpture was done using white Parian Marble and now rests in a prominent
position in the Louvre museum in Paris, France. The sculpture is an example of
how violent motion and sudden stillness can meet. The sculpture was made by a
master hand; it’s detail is astounding. Nike’s gown is wet and can be seen clinging
to her skin. The gown ripples across her body in the fierce wind blowing off
the sea. You can see the sculpture leaning forward against nature’s power.
Before her arms were broken off, her right hand was cupped in front of her
mouth to deliver the shout of victory. This sculpture is one of my absolute
favorites because of both it’s amazing detail and grace.
