Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Napoleon Crossing the Alps
By Jacques Louis David
Art Movement: Neoclassicism

This portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte was painted by Jacques Louis David around 1801 as part of a commission given by the king of Spain. After taking power in France Napoleon was determined to retake territory seized by Austria. Hoping to gain an advantage he secretly led his army over the Alps. It is interesting to notice the names on the rocks in the lower left hand corners. Napoleon’s name is next to that of Hannibal who also took an army through the Alps in order to attack Rome. The painting is loyal to its Neoclassical style. The crossing of the Alps was done during fair weather and Napoleon actually rode a cross mounted on a mule. He was led across by a guide several days after the troops. This painting was a great example of the use of propaganda.
