The Birth of Venus
By Sandro Botticelli
Art Movement: Renaissance
Commissioned by the Medici family of Florence in 1486, it portrays the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a
fully grown woman. The painting is currently on display at the Uffizi Gallery
in Florence, Italy. Botticelli's art often contained a strong classical influence. This painting was ground breaking in the fact that up to this point most women in art were a representation of the virgin Mary. This painting's clearly pagan themes and nude woman were the beginning of a change in the style of art.
