The Swing
By Jean-Honore Fragonard
Art Movement: Rococo
This is the oil painting for which
Jean-Honore Fragonard is most well
known for. All though most commonly known as The Swing it is also known as The
Happy Accidents of the Swing. It was completed in 1767 and is part of the Wallace
Collection now residing in London. The painting is typical of the frothy Rococo
style. The man in the background is the older husband of the woman on the
swing, while the young man in the bushes is her secret lover. Immorality was rampant
during this time period and surfaces frequently in the artwork. All though many
may enjoy this style I cannot find the same love for it. I am of the same
opinion of Gabriel Francois Doyen who was first asked to make this painting in
his belief that it was inappropriate.
